Sam Levin: Project Sprout
Junior year, Sam decided to start a community garden. He wanted to learn how to garden. And he wanted to start a garden that could benefit his community, and also become a learning opportunity for others. Here is the story, going from a small plot nurtured by him and his friend, to a much larger plot tended by dozens in the community. The question is ... why can't there be all kinds of projects like this coming out of schools directed and run by students, with the assistance (where needed) of staff and/or coaches, mentors, and partners in the community? Why aren't there more endeavors like this happening throughout our school systems?
How could you broach this idea in or with your school? Who would want to do it? Who would you start with? Why? To what end? What would/could be learned? How?
